The Unexpected

All of us were changed when COVID-19 shattered our world. Our plans and goals for this year evaporated, and our expectations of 2020 were changed in an instant.

For me, 2020 was unexpected right from the start. Some major event happened each month that I had to deal with, from wrestling with depression, to resolving a team problem at work to facing the COVID-19 pandemic. This year has been filled with unexpected twists and turns. But isn’t that life? We can plan, make goals, and have certain expectations but the reality is it can all change in an instant. However, having the unexpected crash into our lives can be a good thing even if we don’t see it at the time. It can cause us to grow, develop new skills, gain a fresh perspective, and force us to carefully consider what we value in life.

Even though the unexpected can help us grow as individuals, it’s also okay to mourn what we’ve lost. During this pandemic, many of us have lose loved ones to the virus, experienced job loss, financial difficulties, and social isolation, and suffered the erosion of dreams and plans.

Despite our losses, positive things are still happening during this crisis. People are coming together as a community. Nature is thriving. We are slowing down to appreciate the simple things and tackling life’s big questions at the same time. I don’t know about you but I’ve been taking this time to cultivate my relationships with those closest to me and dig deeper into my faith.

What things are you mourning in this season? What positive things are you experiencing during this time?
